What is an online document editor?
An online document editor is a browser-based tool that lets you change text inside a Word file, PDF, screenshot or scanned page without installing desktop software. Synthixx Document Editor preserves the original font, size, colour and bold/italic formatting, and by default processes everything locally so your file never leaves your device.
Editing text in place is different from retyping the whole file. Traditional editors make you rewrite content and lose formatting. A document editor detects each text region — a line, a cell, a paragraph — remembers how it looks (font family, size, weight, alignment, colour) and only swaps the words when you type.
Online editors fall into three camps:
• Word-processing editors that rebuild the file (formatting often drifts).
• PDF annotation tools that overlay text boxes (the original text stays visible underneath).
• True in-place editors that redraw only the edited region in the same style.
Synthixx Document Editor belongs to the third camp for DOCX and PDF, and uses OCR matching for images and scans. That distinction matters when a contract, invoice or certificate must keep looking like the original after a single word change.
How does editing a DOCX preserve formatting perfectly?
A DOCX file stores text and formatting separately, so Synthixx can replace only the words and leave bold, italic, fonts, colours, size and paragraph spacing exactly as they were. Word sometimes splits one word across several internal runs; the editor re-joins those runs so you edit the whole word and the export stays identical to the original aside from your change.
A Word document is a ZIP package of XML. Each "run" records text plus its style (font, size, weight, colour). When you edit a run, the editor changes the <w:t> text node and keeps the formatting properties untouched — which is why the result is pixel-identical to the source apart from the characters you intended to change.
Word's split-run behaviour is the main trap for naive editors. Real-time collaborative typing in Word splits words across runs invisibly. If an editor treats each run as an independent block, you end up editing fragments and the formatting fragments too. Synthixx merges adjacent runs that share identical styles before editing, so you always select and replace the complete word.
Can you edit text in a PDF without Adobe?
Yes. If the PDF has a selectable text layer, Synthixx reads the exact position and style of every word and redraws only your edited region in the closest standard font, keeping the surrounding layout untouched. For scanned PDFs, run the page through image mode so OCR can locate and replace the text.
PDFs with a text layer behave almost like Word documents for editing: coordinates, font, size and colour are stored in the file, so replacement text is placed precisely over the original location.
Two things to know about PDF editing:
• Fonts that are embedded and inaccessible are approximated with a standard family (Arial, Helvetica, Times New Roman). For most business documents this is visually identical.
• Scanned PDFs contain no text layer; they are images. Use the image pipeline (OCR) so the editor can detect the words and their styling before you make changes.
No Adobe product, no license, no plugin is required — everything runs in the browser.
Is it safe to edit scanned documents and photos?
Yes. For images and scans the editor uses Tesseract OCR entirely in your browser to detect each word and its style, then lets you type replacements that are redrawn in the detected font, size and colour. Accuracy is very high on flat screenshots and high-resolution scans; complex photos with textured backgrounds benefit from the AI Enhance pass.
The image pipeline works in four stages:
1. The page image is upscaled to at least 1500px so glyphs are clean.
2. OCR detects lines, words, boxes and per-word style flags (bold, italic, size).
3. Table rows are split into individual cells at large horizontal gaps, and right-aligned columns are detected automatically.
4. When you save, only your edited regions are redrawn over the original pixels — the rest of the image is untouched.
For a fee-free utility, this keeps the barrier to entry at zero while still giving you confidence controls: you can filter low-confidence regions, zoom, and toggle detected-boundary boxes.
When should you use the optional AI Enhance feature?
Only use AI Enhance for PDFs and images when local OCR misreads a word. The button shows a preview of the current page to Google Gemini to correct OCR mistakes, and a confirmation dialog runs before anything is sent. For DOCX files and normal edits, nothing ever leaves your device.
Privacy is handled honestly here rather than with vague marketing copy:
• Default behaviour — 100% client-side. Detection, editing, rendering and export all happen in your browser. No upload, no servers, no logs.
• AI Enhance — this is the single exception, and it is opt-in. It sends a page preview and the detected text to Google Gemini for OCR correction. You are always asked to confirm first, and the feature is only available for PDF and image documents, never DOCX.
• No watermark, no signup, no daily limits, no stored copies of your documents.
If your thread model forbids any external call, simply never click AI Enhance. The rest of the tool continues to work fully offline.
How accurate is it?
Word documents (.docx) — perfect. Text and formatting are stored separately, so only the words change and everything else is untouched.
PDFs with selectable text — the layout and position are preserved exactly. Replacement text is drawn in the closest standard font.
Screenshots and exported images — very close, usually indistinguishable, because the background is flat and the font is a common one.
Scans and photos — good, but the font is estimated from pixels. You can change the match if it looks wrong.

Why is bold or italic lost after I edit a word?
Formatting is stored per region, so it is normally preserved on edit. If a correction is lost, open the style panel for that region and toggle the Bold or Italic checkbox — the change is redrawn instantly. The bold flag is also auto-detected from OCR for images and PDFs.
